Backwell CC 'Battle' - the re-match!

*** Images wanted ***
Bring in up to four digital images for the re-match on Monday 27th February, or email Jeff Kay your images beforehand. Note the size required - 1400x1050 pixels in sRGB space.

In November we competed in our first ever long-distance 'battle' - against Backwell Camera Club in North Somerset. The evening, a 'home' match for us, was a resounding success (even though we lost!) with some high quality images from both clubs and an entertaining commentary from our guest judge, Chorley's Gordon Jenkins.

The images and commentary were loaded onto a CD for Backwell to play back in one of their club evenings, and last week we received some very complimentary feedback from their club secretary.

We've now been challenged to a re-match, this time an 'away' fixture, with Backwell hosting and recording the event for us to watch at a later date in our summer programme. Please bring along your best images on Monday 27 February, or email them to Jeff Kay beforehand.

Digital Workshops - Monday 27th February

Do you have any tips in Photoshop, Elements or any other digital editing software application that you'd like to share or even demonstrate via the projector to our members?

Or perhaps there's some clever imaging techniques that you've seen used, but can't understand how it's done? If so, please let us know, either at our next meeting on Monday 20th February or by emailing us at web@darwencameraclub.org.uk.

We always get great feedback whenever we run these evenings, but they only work if we have techniques and ideas to discuss and demonstrate. So get your thinking caps on and send in your suggestions!

Bolton Museum & Library exhibition

Bolton Museum and Library currently have an interesting exhibition of photographs from Harold Crompton Robinson, who worked in Northern England in the 1950s.  His photographs evoke memories of a bygone time, with many of his images depicting the stark industrial landscape of the time.

Bolton Museum's website provides more information on the exhibition, which is open until 7th April.

Monthly Competition results: February 2012

Our latest club competition took place on Monday 13th February and was well supported by members, with almost 50 images entered across the two categories.  This month's competition also saw us try a new scoring system for the first time, with images awarded a score out of 5 marks, matching the scores awarded in higher competitions.

New judge Barry Dickinson had a difficult task in deciding the winners in each category from a wide selection of high-scoring images:

Prints
1 Exotic Dancer - Jeff Kay
2 Three Chimneys and a Spire - Graham Dean
3 Laurel and Hardy - Linda Walsh

Digitally Projected Images
1 Lakes Farm - Bill Nairn
2 Cherry Drop - Iain Houghton
3 Nets and Shadows - Pat Kay

Congratulations to our winners this month.  Our next competition will take place on 19th March, so start getting your ideas and images ready now!

The Self-Portrait Challenge

Indiana Jones by Jeff Kay.
But can you do better?

An additional element to our competitions this year is the Self-Portrait challenge - a fun monthly challenge to all of our members to produce some interesting and original self-portraits.

Our February competition included three self-portrait images, each of a different style and each original in their ideas.

The self-portrait challenge runs in addition to each monthly competition, with a prize promised at our Christmas meeting for the best image produced - why not enter yourself?

Darwen Camera Club 2012 Exhibition

Our Annual Exhibition began on Saturday 18th February at Darwen Library, and runs until Thursday 8th March. Please encourage friends and family to come along and take a look at the work we produce.

Although non-competitive, the public will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite image.

We'll also have information available about the club for any visitors who want to take their interest further and come along to our meetings each Monday.

Memberships are now due

Please note that our annual subscriptions are now due.  Please make arrangements to complete a renewal form and forward your subscriptions to Martin Powell, club Treasurer.  We've kept rates at the same level as last year - £35 for a single membership and £60 for a joint membership.

Martin will be available on Monday evenings or email him at treasurer@darwencameraclub.org.uk.

Dates for your diary

With club evenings resuming after the Christmas and New Year break, there's a few events coming up soon for members to be aware of:

The Lancashire & Cheshire Photographic Union (L&CPU) are again holding their Big Day of Photography at the University of Cumbria, Lancaster.  This year's event will be on Sunday 18th March, and admission is £10 per person.  There will be five presentations from a variety of experienced speakers, plus a prints-only competition for all attendees.

The club have ordered tickets for several members in advance - one of these is now spare, so please contact web@darwencameraclub.org.uk if you're interested in attending.

The club's Annual Exhibition at Darwen Library is currently on display until Thursday 8th March.

We want to show work from as meny members as possible, so please think about which images you'd like to exhibit and let us know the titles of your entries by Monday 6th February.  This gives us time to prepare the display, posters and labels.  Bring the actual prints (which must be mounted, though can be any size) by the following Monday, 13th February.
